In a post apocalyptic and ravaged world lives Three, a mysterious bounty hunter, a loner who appears harsh and unyielding. Yet underneath his emotions lay hidden by necessity.
He’s in town to collect a bounty and finds himself reluctantly and against his better judgement the guardian to a mother, Cass, and her young son, Wren, who are clearly in some sort of trouble.
All Cass wants is to keep her son safe but she is far from well and very vulnerable. Three is moved by her plight even though his considerable misgivings are multiplying. Cass has an addition that’s spiralling out of control and is on the run from brain hackers who want her son and are prepared to kill her. There’s a lot more to Wren than a confused, frightened little boy. He has a very special ability.
The world is a dark and dangerous place peopled by Weirs with glowing blue eyes, zombie like creatures who kill any humans out after dark. The humans who survived the devastation of the earth have enhanced powers and abilities but still must lock themselves away during the hours of darkness.
It’s a fascinating and gritty story, full of action, intrigue and suspense. The action scenes are vividly described with no holds barred. There are teary moments involving Cass and Wren and the ending is totally unexpected…and sad.
Five star narration and voice characterisation from Luke Daniels. I found it impossible not to be moved to sadness or feel the tension and suspense.
It took a little while to get hooked because there’s no back story but once the story took hold there was no letting go. Three is especially intriguing, compelling and charismatic in an offbeat kind of way and all the characters are multi dimensional from the start. It’s easy to invest in them.
